Abstract
This study aims to improve the music education environment by developing a vocal articulation notation system. While articulation symbols for instruments have been widely used worldwide, vocal articulation has not been standardized, relying solely on individual notation methods used by educators without clear criteria. To establish a clear foundation for the development of this notation system, the study traced the evolution of vocal expression functions and extracted vocal elements that have developed from early singing forms. Using ‘VariAudio’ for waveform analysis, the study obtained visual data and identified the necessity of articulations closely linked to vocal melody and expression. The system categorizes expressive elements of vocal melodies as ‘melody symbols’ and sound elements, such as vocalization, resonance, and breath control, as ‘vocalization symbols.’ This intuitive notation system, referred to as ‘vocal articulation symbols,’ is expected to facilitate smooth communication between educators and learners, ultimately improving the singing education environment. By providing a standardized method for expressing vocal articulation, this study contributes to the efficiency of vocal training and the advancement of arts education.
