Aerodynamic optimization of multi-element airfoil

Abstract

In this paper, aerodynamic design of high-lift multi-element airfoil is conducted based on a gradient-based optimization method utilizing CFD and sensitivity analysis method. For flow analysis, a 2-D unstructured Navler-Stokes solver Is applied, and a solution-adaptive grid is generated for accuracy enhancement. For efficient calculation of objective function gradient, a discrete adjoint code is applied. Utilizing the above methods, aerodynamic optimization system is developed. As a design example, lift of the 30P30N airfoil is maximized.
