Abstract

Aminosilane-siicon oxide gas barrier coating was prepared on PES substrates by two stage process. Organic-inorganic hybrid layers were coated by sol-gel process and it was oxygen plasma treated to make the silicon oxide-like layers. γ-APS solution in ethanol was coated and cured to still enhance the barrier properties. XPS, FE-SEM have been used for characterization of each layer of barrier coating. Organo functional silanes bonds were formed by the interaction of the silanol groups with metal oxide surface, which covered the defect of silicon oxide layer on the substrates. The oxygen transmission rate of barrier coated substrates was found to be 1.05 ccl m2 day, compareable to those obtained from physical inorganic layer deposition method.
