Abstract

The objective of this paper is to empirically test the validity of the prevailing business model of the Korean Internet stock trading market, and search for the possibility of updating it to incorporate the changes in market needs. Since 1998, the Internet stock trading companies in Korea have been adopting the commission discount strategy as their major business model so as to attract more customers to their web site. However, customer needs as well as the Internet technology have changed drastically in the meantime, which means that their current business model should be adapted accordingly. Nevertheless, literature tackling this issue has seldom been reported. In this sense, this paper is aimed at empirically testing the validity of the current business model and seeking the possibility to revise it for the purpose of incorporating the changes in market trend. For this purpose, we collected 83 valid questionnaires and performed empirical analysis. Results showed that the commission discount policy, a currently prevailing business model in the Korean Internet stock trading market should be modified to incorporate several additional factors such as Easy to use, Reliability, Relative Advantage, and Need to Improve Speed.
