Bacteria-dye combination screening: Diamine-containing BMeS-p-A dye for specific fluorescence imaging of Acinetobacter baumannii

Abstract

We propose a bacteria-dye combination screening strategy for the fluorescence staining of a specific bacteria strain. The threat of bacteria and its drug-resistance is getting ever more severe, and they are constantly harming human beings. Under these circumstances, precise identification of a specific bacteria is essential for diagnosing and finding the proper drugs for treatment. In this study, we discovered that a positively-charged diamine-containing BMeS-p-A dye has a selective staining ability of Gram-negative Acinetobacter baumannii (AB) and carbapenem-resistant AB (CRAB) over other bacteria strains. We systematically analyzed the photophysical properties, sensing abilities, and the antibiotic effect of BMeS-p-A. We utilized the BMeS-p-A for monitoring the biofilm of AB and CRAB in medical supplies; urethral tract catheters. The results of this study will facilitate further applications in a variety of medical fields.
