Bio-inspired electroactive materials for supercapacitors

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

Recent research has aimed at the electrodes constructed from biomass that naturally contains redox-active species due to its easy accessibility, environmental friendliness, good sustainability, and low cost. The progress of energy storage technology has been recently based on a variety of bio-inspired and biomimetic design methodologies. These devices must have improved interactions, novel functionality, and robust electrode/electrolyte interfaces to wholly satisfy the expectations of the exponentially growing electronic industry. This chapter summarizes and discusses how bio-inspired approaches may affect the design of electrodes and devices as well as the analogous interface interactions. Utilizing knowledge from surface topography, natural hierarchical structure, biological materials, and biochemical processes can enhance the performance and stability of energy devices. Energy management and expected future studies in this area are also covered.
