Abstract

Rapid urbanization and population growth contribute heavily to intensifying pollution, especially water pollution. Water pollution not only deteriorates the aesthetic value, but also affects its quality like DO, BOD, and COD. Polluted water is unsafe for drinking as it is associated with serious health issues. Hence, from an environmental perspective, it is essential to develop new technologies to resolve the problem. Biopolymers such as chitosan, agar, and alginate are suitable for the fabrication of nanocomposites or hydrogels for the removal of dyes, toxic heavy metal ions, and separation of oily water from wastewater. This chapter deals with the application of polysaccharide-based bionanocomposite for the removal of toxicorganic dyes and other contaminants from wastewater. The physical properties of the bionanocompsite are also discussed.
