Abstract

Palm kernel cake is a leftover biomass waste after palm oil production, mainly consisting of hemicellulose (19.8%), cellulose (47.0%) and lignin (27.4%). In this study, palm kernel cake was pyrolyzed to produce bio fuel. The pyrolysis temperature was determined to be 400- 460°C by thermogravimetric analysis. The results of XRD and Klason lignin measurement indicated that the hemicellulose and cellulose of the palm kernel cake were completely decomposed to produce gas, bio-oil and solid products while some of lignin remained after pyrolysis. The gas product was a mixture of C1-C4 alkanes (74.9%), ethylene (17.2%) and a small fraction of CO, CO2 (7.9%). Experimental data of product distribution were well fitted with equations of the lumped kinetic model. The reaction pathway was investigated based on the calculated kinetic constants.
