N2 - This paper conceptually evaluates three transonic transports configurations-four-engine, high wing, and rear jet configurations-based on their reduction in fuel burn and the adaptability to the large diameter of advanced aero engines, i.e., geared turbo fan and open rotor engines. The superiorities of the three configurations compared to the conventional low wing two-engine configuration are estimated to be large only with open rotor engines but not with geared turbo fan engines.
