Abstract

In 1808, Charles Fourier wrote that “the most icy climates in the world, such as those on a line from St Petersburg to Okhotsk, will enjoy temperatures such as can as yet only be found in the most renowned resorts, like Florence, Nice, Montpellier and Lisbon, blessed as they are with gentle and unruffled skies”.
