Abstract
This study investigates the performance of mechanical beam–column joints with bolted endplates and grouted concrete fillers in reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Investigations were conducted using nonlinear finite element analyses (FEA) considering concrete damaged plasticity. Numerical models were constructed based on the methodology established in previous literature, in which FEA parameters were calibrated in microstructure levels based on test results, so the considered joint is simulated in steel-reinforced concrete structures. In contrast to foregone research, this paper examined the behavior of RC frames, wherein deformations, strain evolutions, and von Mises and Tresca stresses of frame elements were explored. In addition, critical components were identified, demonstrating design principles of the proposed connections. Further, an erection test was used to show the safety and accuracy of the structure. Thus, this study completed a comprehensive verification of a potential solution for precast assemblies that not only improves construction efficiency but also provides sufficient strength and rigidity.
