Abstract

The rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years has garnered significant attention from both industry and academia due to its transformative potential and capacity to enable innovative solutions. Central to the IoT paradigm is the creation of expansive, collaborative networks that necessitate efficient functioning for long-term operational sustainability. Green IoT has emerged as a critical framework prioritizing the sustainability and feasibility of these extensive IoT ecosystems. This chapter provides a systematic and comprehensive exploration of the role of optimization in the design, operation, and maintenance of green IoT networks. An introductory overview of optimization principles and the formal structure of optimization problems is presented as a foundation for the discussion. This is followed by an in-depth analysis of various optimization methodologies, including their application in addressing key challenges within IoT networks. To contextualize these techniques, the chapter delves into their integration within network architectures and examines pivotal resource allocation strategies such as power allocation, beamforming, time allocation, and channel access, etc. These resource management strategies are critically evaluated for their role in enhancing the performance, efficiency, and sustainability of IoT systems. Furthermore, the chapter investigates emerging enabling technologies required to support the increasing density of IoT deployments. Specifically, the potential of technologies such as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and Backscatter Communications is highlighted for their ability to extend network capabilities, improve energy efficiency, and facilitate innovative communication paradigms. The chapter concludes by identifying future research directions and outlining the prospective development trajectories of next-generation IoT networks.
