Abstract
Primary stability is one of the most important prerequisites for osseointegration, being paramount to the long-term success of dental implants. Furthermore, it is also a critical factor when immediate loading is planned. It is achieved by anchoring the implant in the bone at insertion and several factors can influence it, the most important ones being bone quantity and quality, surgical technique and implant design. It has traditionally been measured by the surgeon during implant placement, but nowadays different equipments are available, allowing more precise and repeated measurements. The present paper aims to give an overview of this important feature of dental implants.
