Abstract

Probability assessments on the minimum thickness requirements of one-way slabs of ACI 318 and the span-to-depth ratio equation proposed by Scanlon and Lee in 2005 are performed. A probabilistic layered model is used to estimate both immediate and long-term deflections considering creep and shrinkage. Monte Carlo simulation is used to estimate deflections and probabilities of serviceability failure for reinforced concrete one-way slabs sized according to the ACI 318 requirements and the proposed span-to-depth ratio equation. Serviceability failure is defined to occur when a deflection, a result of flexure exceeds the code specified allowable deflection limits. It was found that the unified span-to-depth ratio equation was more realistic and adequate for deflection control as well as engineering practice.
