Abstract
A study was carried out to provide an understanding of the effects of toughening aid in the dominant resins. Towards this end, the mechanical and acoustic emission properties of the fiber-reinforced bismaleimide (BMI) composites made with toughening aid concentrations were determined. The acoustic emission (AE) measurements of composites were determined by using a piezoelectric transducer apparatus. The results led to the conclusion that both the tensile and acoustic emission properties of the carbon fiber-reinforced BMI composites are increased in the presence of a toughening agent and their optimal properties are observed in about 20 wt% concentration of TM 120. Further, it was revealed that the improved ductile properties of resin matrix significantly affect interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composites.
